GGH cultivates healthcare leaders of tomorrow
Guelph, ON – July 4, 2024 – Guelph General Hospital (GGH) recently celebrated the graduation of 24 team members from its Emerging People Leaders program, a transformative nine-month course that teaches eligible employees the skills required to become successful healthcare leaders.
The program was established in 2021 with the goal of growing leaders from within, recognizing the outstanding talent that already exists at the hospital. The curriculum consists of a leadership development framework established by the Canadian College of Health Leaders (LEADS in a Caring Environment). Participants are also guided by a mentor in the organization who provides coaching and hands on training.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our most recent graduates and their commitment to ongoing learning. Since its inception, this program has celebrated 74 alumni with several moving into formal leadership roles at the hospital,” shared Karen Suk-Patrick, Vice President, People, Culture and Community.
In addition to the Emerging People Leader program, the hospital also provides such initiatives as education assistance funds and opportunities to shadow other areas of services as well as health and wellness initiatives. As a result, the hospital has experienced an increase human resource capacity and successfully reduced the number of unfilled positions.
“After taking on my first leadership role as a Charge Technologist in the Laboratory, my manager suggested I complete the Emerging People Leader program to ensure I was successful in my new role. The program has truly transformed how I approach my work and I am more confident in my role,” Hiral Sheth, one of the programs most recent graduates.
Last month, the hospital also announced a partnership with the University of Guelph to foster innovation in healthcare delivery. Part of this undertaking is accelerated learning and student placement models, providing even more opportunities to learn and grow at Guelph General Hospital.
